My Design Process

Step 1: Discovery

Step 2: Scheduling

During this stage, you’ll tell me about your design project, your goals for the piece, and how it will be used, such as marketing, an event, or general information. I’ll ask questions to learn about your business and your target audience so the finished design can speak to the right people. We’ll also review your brand guidelines and your existing materials. I’ll then summarize the information we’ve discussed and share it with you to make sure we’re aligned on the project’s scope and objectives.

Next I’ll create a project schedule based on your desired delivery date. It will outline when I’ll need content like text and images, when you can expect to receive proofs, and when the final files will be delivered. This helps keep the project on track and ensures each step is clear and well-timed.

Step 3: Design

Once the schedule is agreed upon, I’ll begin designing your piece. Depending on the size, scope and schedule of your project, the design phase may take anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

Step 4: Proofing & Revisions

I’ll provide a pdf of the design for your feedback, then revise it based on your input. You can share your thoughts with me in person, by phone, or leave comments in the pdf. This back-and-forth process usually takes two or three rounds.

Step 4: File Delivery

Electronic files of the final approved design will be delivered in the appropriate file format (pdf, jpg, eps, etc.) and in the correct color space (RGB, HEX, or CMYK). Depending on their size, the files are either emailed to you or uploaded to DropBox, where you can download them at your convenience.

FAQs

Here are answers to some of the questions clients often ask.

  • Bringing over 20 years of design experience from the Seattle area, I’m now based in Port Angeles, WA. Thanks to PDFs and the internet, I’m able to work with clients on the Olympic Peninsula, throughout the Pacific Northwest, and across the country.

  • I work with nonprofit organizations across a wide range of causes—from food insecurity and homelessness, to animal welfare and the arts. I also enjoy working with small businesses in fields as varied as gardening, photography, wellness and wine tasting.

  • Design services are billed hourly, while logo design is billed on a per-project basis.

    • My design services are billed at $80 per hour. Services include discovery, design work, image editing and retouching, proofing, revisions, and delivery of the final electronic files.

    • Logo design is billed as a flat project fee of $3,200. This includes three logo concepts, two revisions to your chosen logo, and delivery of final electronic files.

    • I accept checks, Pay A Person, or direct deposit through online services such as Bill.com.

  • No. I retain copyright of the design and ownership of raw or native working files (e.g., layered InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator files). By industry standard, you’ll have usage rights of the final delivered electronic file so that you can print or otherwise display it, but you will not be able to edit or sell the underlying design.

  • No. I work exclusively with Adobe Creative Cloud apps, including InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. (Publisher and Canva don’t offer the precise control or advanced editing features needed for high-resolution, complex, or print-ready designs.)

  • Yes, I will happily supply references!
